
THRIVE 2030 Project: The Pigs Value Chain (PVC)
This seven-year project (2023–2030) is being implemented in partnership with World Vision Rwanda across 14 Districts: Gakenke, Burera, Rulindo, Gicumbi, Kayonza, Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Gisagara, Huye, Karongi, Rutsiro, Ngororero, Nyamasheke, and Rusizi. The project targets 7,710 pig farmers organized into 257 producer groups, with the main objective of transforming participants’ pig-rearing businesses from subsistence to market-oriented, targeting a daily household income of US$5 to improve livelihoods and children’s well-being.

To support willing pig farmers to shift from rearing local and non-prolific pigs to improved ones.

Key Achievements
By 2024
Capacity Strengthening of Pig Farmers
7,725 pig farmers were reached and coached on pig farming as a business and market-oriented practice.
Thanks to the support of the project, in 2024 the average number of pigs per household rose from 2 to 4 (35,556 pigs raised by 6,480 farmers), and 3,031 improved pigsties were constructed.
7,171 pigs were vaccinated to prevent diseases outbreak, and 1,024 pigs were insured
A total of 1,617,468,244 RWF was generated through selling pigs and pig by-products (manure)
Activity Related to Breed Improvement
4,567 pig farmers were trained and adopted hydroponic fodder production
89 community-based pig inseminators were trained in artificial insemination, and 1,028 pigs were inseminated to improve pig breeds.
4,231 improved breed pigs were purchased by pig farmers
